Painting with Fire at Weylandts

For centuries, the art of building thatch roofs has stood as a testament to craftsmanship and natural materials, preserving a timeless tradition that has adorned homes and structures in various parts of the world. Thatch roofs, known for their rustic charm and durability, offer a unique connection to nature while providing insulation and long-lasting beauty.

Weylandts, the renowned furniture brand, embarked on an innovative project that breathed new life into the art of thatch. Sonja Du Plessis, Visual Merchandiser and Stylist at Weylandts, approached me with an idea that ignited my excitement - painting with fire on thatch.

Preserving a Timeless Tradition

Thatch roofs have been created through generations by layering dry vegetation such as straw or reed. Skilled craftsmanship ensures a water-resistant fit, honouring cultural heritage and sustainable practices. Weylandts, always keen on embracing unique concepts, had installed vertical thatching on a wall in selected stores for their winter concept. Now, for the summer, they wanted to take it a step further by branding a pattern onto the thatch using heat.

Pushing Boundaries of Art

When Sonja expressed her desire to push the boundaries, I knew I was the right person for the job. We met in person to discuss her idea and decided to test it on a small panel. With the guidance of a thatching expert and three weeks of trial and error, incorporating necessary safety precautions, we were ready to bring this fiery concept to the stores.

Unconventional Artwork on Vertical Thatch Installations

This unconventional concept of creating artworks on vertical thatch installations is capturing the interest of various establishments, such as restaurants, Safari lodges, and Game Reserves. Cornel Piek, Member of BM Thatchers Johannesburg, expressed their appreciation for the innovative use of thatch. It's a wonderful way to explore the versatility of this ancient tradition.
